Ten Tors

Ten Tors is an expedition for young people over three distances on Dartmoor which is staged on a weekend in May by the army and various other supporters. It is a wonderful challenge and I wish every young person could have a go at it – it is how I got into walking in my youth.

The main Ten Tors web site can be found here …

The moors is closed to walkers during times when the army are live firing and Dartmoor firing ranges times can be found here …

There are also restrictions for those undertaking Ten Tors as to which parts of the moor you can walk on. Dartmoor is a protected environment and the home of many rare nesting birds. The rare bird nesting restrictions can be found here …

There are very strict rules about what kit has to be carried – in my day you even had to have a length of rope! Here is a link to the official kit list – warning it is a pdf so may not open like a regular web page but I suspect you know what to do. Ten Tors kit list

There is also an event called the Jubilee Challenge as part of the event for those who find life or walking more of a challenge. I currently help a group with this event and it is great to be part of.
