Walk tomorrow (14th June) CANCELLED. I'm really sorry and it was a close call but with the thunderstorm warnings still in place tomorrow I feel I have no choice but to cancel the walk. Sorry.

Tavistock Hill Walking Club

We are a group of ordinary people who enjoy walking on the high moor of Dartmoor.

We try to make every second Saturday in the month a hill walking club day but this may vary from time to time. We will advertise the next walk on the front page of this web site.

If those who come on the walk would like to practice some navigation then we can facilitate this.

Longer walks will require more equipment but more of that in the future. Please note that the only way off the moor will be by walking so if you think you might not make it understand that the only way off will be to walk – no one is going to pick you up should you want to stop. Of course, in an emergency rescue services have the means to help you off, but if you can walk off you will still be expected to. At this time I am afraid I am going to say no dogs – we may in the future allow them or organise walks where they can come, but if that happens we will be expecting owners to abide by the National Park guidelines which is dogs on leads if they are on the high moor. Sorry. We will go whatever the weather unless the weather is judged to be a danger to life. If we have to cancel a notice will be posted on the front of this site.

Basic Kit List (extras might be required on more difficult or longer walks). You may wish to bring extra kit, if you have it.

Waterproof walking boots (I prefer leather for Dartmoor but you need to work out if they can cope with walking through a bog and shallow streams for yourself),
Good quality waterproofs – both jacket and trousers (by good quality I mean at least 2 layer water protection – it needs to stand up to Dartmoor heavy rain all day long, – getting wet is very dangerous on the moor,
Warm layer (it can get cold even in the summer),
Map and Compass, if you have them.
Suitable Hat,
Personal first aid kit – including blister plasters,
Sun cream and sunglasses (on sunny days obviously),
Snacks and food for lunch (depending on how long the walk is and bearing in mind something in case of an emergency (it can take several hours to get any support),
Water in a strong container (and or other drinks). On a hot day you can easily consume 2 litres. You can replenish from streams but you will need to consider how to sterilize the water e.g. purification tablets
Rucksack of good size and construction (they need to stand up to the strain and be comfortable), with a waist belt and chest strap is best,
Safety kit e.g. whistle, emergency stuff like extra food and a survival bag.
